The Plateau State Government has condemned the reported attack on traders returning from the Bukuru Kara Livestock Market in Jos South Local Government Area, describing the incident as sad and unacceptable.
The attack, which occurred around the State Low-Cost housing area in Bukuru, targeted traders identified as Fulani herders returning from the livestock market, prompting swift reaction from the state government.
Government Condemns Attack, Commiserates With Victims
The condemnation was contained in a statement issued on October 5, 2026, by the Honourable Commissioner for Information and Communication, Rt. Hon. Joyce Lohya Ramnap.
According to the statement, the administration of His Excellency, Governor Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang, has extended condolences to the families and victims affected by the unfortunate incident.
The government noted that the attack on legitimate traders going about their lawful business is condemnable and does not reflect the peace-building efforts being championed in the state.
βThe Government, under the leadership of His Excellency, Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang, Esq, extends condolences to the families and victims of the incident,β the statement said.
The statement stressed that every law-abiding citizen has the right to live and do business anywhere in the state without fear of molestation.
Security Agencies Directed To Investigate, Residents Urged To Remain Calm
To forestall further breakdown of law and order within the Jos-Bukuru metropolis, the state government disclosed that it has directed security agencies to thoroughly investigate the circumstances surrounding the attack.
The investigation is expected to uncover the identities and motives of those responsible for the attack on the Kara Market traders.
The government also called on communities, traders, pastoralists and other stakeholders to remain calm and resist any attempt to escalate tensions or deepen divisions in the area.
Govt Warns Against Reprisal, Moves To Strengthen Security
The Plateau State Government warned that there must be no room for reprisal attacks or the taking of the law into individual hands, as security agencies are already handling the matter.
It added that while investigations continue, it is engaging relevant stakeholders to strengthen security along vulnerable routes, especially livestock and market routes, to prevent a recurrence.
Citizens were further encouraged to provide useful information to security authorities that could assist the ongoing investigation and help bring perpetrators to justice.
M2NICE Editorial Note: The Bukuru Kara Livestock Market is one of the major livestock trading hubs in Jos South LGA, attracting traders from Plateau and neighbouring states. Security along the Low-Cost - Bukuru axis has remained a concern for traders returning late from market days, making government's call for enhanced patrols and community intelligence crucial to preventing reprisal attacks.
