Tinubu Extends Working Vacation In Europe, To Return Weekend - Presidency

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has extended his working vacation in Europe by a few days and is now expected to return to Nigeria at the weekend, the Presidency has announced.

The President departed Nigeria on August 30, 2026 for a three-week working vacation, starting in London where he spent about a week before proceeding to Paris, France. This is according to a statement by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy.

Tinubu Holds Meetings In Paris As Vacation Continues

While in Paris, President Tinubu held meetings with French President Emmanuel Macron at the Elysee Palace and with businessman Vincent Bollore, whose group includes Canal+, MultiChoice and Universal Music Group. Discussions focused on expanding investment in Nigeria's creative, digital economy and fibre-optic infrastructure.

“President Tinubu has continued to keep in touch with home and direct affairs of the nation while on vacation, including ordering an independent panel to investigate the death of 37 illegal miners in Minna after detention by the NSCDC.”

The Presidency said the President has continued to perform his duties and receive briefings on national developments despite being outside the country.

Shettima To Represent Nigeria At UNGA 81

Vice President Kashim Shettima departed Abuja on September 20 for New York to represent Nigeria at the 81st United Nations General Assembly. Shettima will deliver Nigeria’s national statement during the General Debate scheduled for September 22 to 28, 2026. This marks the third consecutive year Shettima is representing the President at UNGA after 2024 and 2025.

The Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume, will continue to represent the President at official functions until his return.

Presidency Responds To Opposition Criticism

The development comes amid criticism from opposition figures including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, who questioned the President’s extended absence and cited Section 145 of the Constitution. The Presidency described insinuations about Tinubu’s non-attendance at UNGA as baseless and irresponsible, maintaining that Nigeria will be properly represented.

M2NICE Analysis: This extension means President Tinubu has spent over three weeks outside Nigeria, a period that coincides with key diplomatic events. While the Presidency assures that governance continues remotely, many Nigerians are watching how the return this weekend will address pressing issues like fuel price hike and security concerns. The UNGA representation by Shettima also shows the administration’s trust in the Vice President to handle global engagements.
