Cristiano Ronaldo's quest to become the first footballer to score 1000 career goals hit a temporary setback on Thursday night as Portugal defeated Wales 1-0 in their UEFA Nations League opener at the Estadio Jose Alvalade in Lisbon.
The 41-year-old Al Nassr forward, who is currently on 979 career goals, thought he had reached 980 goals in the 60th minute after firing past the Wales goalkeeper with his left foot. However, the goal was ruled out for offside after a VAR review, leaving the home crowd disappointed.
Ronaldo Subbed Off As Portugal Beat Wales 1-0
Portugal eventually secured all three points thanks to a first-half goal from Joao Felix. Ronaldo had a frustrating evening, recording seven shots with only two on target, missing one big chance after a brilliant pass from Ruben Neves, and being caught offside three times.
In the 67th minute, new Portugal coach Jorge Jesus made the bold decision to substitute Ronaldo for Goncalo Ramos. Jesus explained after the match that the game demanded more speed and pressing in the final minutes, and Ronaldo was physically exhausted.
āIām no longer at an age where I think about the future. I am focused on the present and achieving my goals.ā
Ronaldo made the statement ahead of the Wales game when asked about retirement. The five-time Ballon d'Or winner revealed his desire to score his 1000th goal in a Portugal jersey, calling it the perfect ending to his illustrious career.
Can Ronaldo Reach 1000 Goals Before Retirement?
Ronaldo now needs 21 more goals to reach the historic 1000-goal mark. He has 146 goals in 234 appearances for Portugal, an international world record. He is contracted to Al Nassr and is expected to continue playing for Portugal until 2027.
With an average of one goal per week in Saudi Pro League and Nations League games, reaching 1000 goals in the next five to six months is very possible if he stays fit.
Next Chance vs Norway And Haaland Tomorrow
Ronaldo will have an immediate chance to reach 980 goals tomorrow, Sunday, September 27, when Portugal travel to face Norway in a blockbuster Nations League clash. The match could see Ronaldo face Manchester City striker Erling Haaland.
Portugal will also play Denmark on October 1 and host Norway on October 4 to conclude the international window.
M2NICE Editorial Note: Ronaldo's 979 goals include 899 club goals and 146 international goals. At 41, his biggest challenge is not skill but game time management by Jorge Jesus. If he avoids injury and plays regularly for Al Nassr, 1000 goals is achievable before mid-2027, which would make him the first player in history to hit four figures.
