Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has reacted to viral reports claiming he has quit active politics and will not contest the 2027 presidential election.
The reports alleged that Atiku told African Democratic Congress (ADC) stakeholders in Adamawa that he plans to step aside and retire from politics, but his camp has now described the claim as false.
Atiku Says Report Is Fake News
Atiku's media aide, Paul Ibe, issued a statement on behalf of the former Vice President dismissing the viral claim as entirely false and deliberately misleading.
According to him, Atiku never held any national meeting with ADC stakeholders where such decision was taken. The only recent engagement was with ADC stakeholders in Adamawa State last Thursday.
“The information circulating on social media about a purported meeting where His Excellency Atiku Abubakar decided to step aside and retire from active politics is entirely false and deliberately misleading”
The statement noted that if Atiku were to take such a consequential decision, it would be formally conveyed through the Atiku Media Office and not through rumours or faceless sources.
Atiku Blames APC For Fake News
The former Vice President accused anti-democratic elements and the current administration of sponsoring the narrative out of fear of what is coming ahead of 2027.
He stressed that the falsehood bears all the hallmarks of a coordinated disinformation campaign designed to create confusion and dampen momentum within the opposition coalition.
2027 Still On Course
Atiku recently won the ADC presidential primary and has insisted he is focused on rescuing Nigeria from what he described as failures of the APC-led government.
The 2027 presidential race is expected to be keenly contested between President Bola Tinubu and opposition figures including Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi.
M2NICE Editorial Note: This denial is important because Atiku's retirement rumour trended heavily on WhatsApp and Facebook. With ADC becoming the main opposition coalition, such fake news could affect opposition momentum. Voters should always verify such claims from Atiku Media Office.
