Lionel Messi has officially brought down the curtain on his legendary international career.
The 39-year-old Argentina captain announced his retirement on Monday, August 31, 2026, just two days after leading Argentina to the 2026 World Cup final where they lost 1-0 to Spain.
"It was a decision that hurt – and still hurts deep down – but I understand that the time has come," Messi wrote on Instagram. "I swear to you that I always gave it my all... I’ve given everything I had; I have nothing left to give."
Messi leaves the international stage as Argentina’s all-time record appearance maker and top scorer with 207 games and 125 goals.
After years of heartbreak including the 2014 World Cup final loss and back-to-back Copa America final defeats, Messi finally tasted glory with Argentina:
- 2021 Copa America
- 2022 Finalissima
- 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar
- 2024 Copa America
He also played in a record 6th World Cup this year in 2026.
"Time is running short, chapters come to a close, and this is one that hurts me deeply," Messi added. "I love, have loved, and will always love being part of the national team."
While his international journey is over, Messi will continue playing club football for Inter Miami until 2028.
From the kid who debuted in 2005 to the captain who delivered Argentina’s first World Cup since 1986, Messi’s international legacy is now complete.
