2027: FG Reacts To Peter Obi, Kwankwaso Claim About Defeating Tinubu

Abuja, Nigeria - The Federal Government has dismissed claims that Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi and NNPP leader Rabiu Kwankwaso said President Bola Tinubu would be defeated in the 2027 general election.

The denial was made on Tuesday, September 8, 2026, as part of the government’s effort to debunk what it described as misinformation circulating in political circles. According to the FG, there was no record of both opposition leaders making such statements publicly.

Opposition Coalition Gaining Momentum Ahead of 2027

Despite the FG’s denial, talks of a possible opposition merger have intensified in recent weeks. The African Democratic Congress, ADC, and Nigeria Democratic Congress, NDC, have both signaled interest in forming a broad coalition to challenge the APC in 2027.

Part of the proposal being discussed is a 4-year single term presidency, which supporters say will allow for power rotation and prevent incumbency advantage. Peter Obi and Rabiu Kwankwaso are seen as key figures in any potential alliance, having pulled millions of votes in the 2023 election.

With INEC already warning politicians against inflammatory campaign language ahead of 2027, the political space is expected to get hotter in the coming months. The Electoral Act 2026 now prescribes a fine of N10 million and possible 12 months imprisonment for politicians found guilty of hate speech during campaigns.

For now, both Obi and Kwankwaso have not issued direct statements confirming or denying the claim attributed to them, leaving supporters and analysts to speculate on the next move of the opposition.
